Our Curriculum in 5th grade
Math- BridgesThis year we are using Bridges in Mathematics, a K–5 math program that will help us meet the new standards and make math meaningful and exciting. In fifth grade, students focus on computing with fractions, dividing with larger numbers, calculating with decimal numbers, and finding the volume of rectangular prisms.
In grade 5 math, your child will: - Use models and strategies to divide 2- and 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, with and without remainders. (Students are not expected to use the standard long division algorithm until sixth grade.) - Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators - Multiply fractions and divide fractions in simple cases - Measure volume - Explain patterns in the number of zeros and the placement of the decimal point in the answer when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 - Read, write, round, compare, add & subtract, multiply & divide decimals - Multiply multi-digit whole numbers - Locate and graph points on a coordinate plane |
Literacy- Ready GenReadyGEN is an integrated literacy program focused on reading, writing, speaking, and listening and designed to get students ready for college and careers. It is built on a collabotative learning model in which teachers and students work together throughout the instructional process to grow students' understanding and expand their knowledge.
Teachers activate the learning process through instruction, modeling, scaffolding, and reteaching as needed. Students collaborate with one another and the teacher to analyze, question, evaluate, and respond as they practice and apply what they have learned. Metacognition is a critical piece in this process. Students engage in self-assessment and use various fix-up strategies as they become increasingly responsible for their own learning. 5th Grade Unit 1- Depending on Each Other Unit 2- Finding Courage Unit 3- Understanding the Universe Unit 4- Exploring New Worlds |
Science/SS- Foss & TCIIn FOSS, our Earth and Sun Module provides students with experiences to explore the properties of the atmosphere, energy transfer from the Sun to Earth, and the dynamics of weather and water cycling in Earth’s atmosphere. We learn about the planets and our solar system.
TCI: Students in grade five study the development of our nation. Students learn that we a constitution that derives its power from the people. It has gone through a revolution that once sanctioned slavery. It experienced conflict over land with the original inhabitants. And it experienced a westward movement that took its people across the continent. Studying the cause, course, and consequences of the early explorations through westward expansion is central to students’ understanding of how the principles of the American republic form the basis of a society in which individual rights are secured. |

MATH RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES
The following selection of games and activities will help your child to practice some of these skills at home. Multiplication Factor Dazzle Players score points for finding all the factors of target numbers set by their opponents. Use "guest pass" to enter game list and play against the computer. Amoeba Multiplication Game Look for "Written Multiplication Game." This activity breaks multi-digit multiplication problems into partial products to solve. Excellent practice with larger multiplication. Beginner level includes 1-digit x 2-digit multiplication; Advanced level uses 3-digit x 2-digit multiplication. Division Sum Sense Division Drag and drop numbers cards to make a division sentence. Also see Sum Sense Multiplication Ordering cards provides an entirely different way to review basic multiplication and division. Bamzooki Multiplication and Division Help the Bamzookis by solving multiplication and division problems. Problems include single digit multiplication, 2-digit x 1-digit multiplication, and 3-digit x 1-digit division with remainders. Quotient Cafe Select a food and characters to practice division with remainders. Press the calculator icon at lower left for help with calculations. Fractions & Decimals Dig It Players take turns digging in a field loaded with precious stones. The object is to collect as much dirt and as many stones as possible. Players tell the shovel where to dig by using a set of numbers to make a fraction–including improper fractions–and then locating that fraction on a number line that runs across the field. The more accurately they locate the fraction, the better their score. Students may need some help to get started. Use "guest pass" to enter game list and play against the computer. Fraction Feud Players use number "cards" to create fractions that are larger (or smaller) than their opponents' in a series of mock jousts. See the "fraction bar chart" to figure out how big a fraction is in relation to an opponent's. Use "guest pass" to enter game list and play against the computer. Drop Zone Players add fractions that will total 1 as they race to win 5 points in this action-packed game. Develops fraction sense, estimation, and skill at adding fractions with like and unlike denominators. Use "guest pass" to enter game list and play against the computer. Adding Fractions This activity challenges students to use pictures to help add fractions with unlike denominators. MathTappers: Estimate Fractions In this free App for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, students relate fractions (symbols and pictures) to the nearest half. Then they use fraction estimates in addition & subtraction problems. Excellent game to use while on the go. Convert Fractions to Decimals Crack this BBC Maths futuristic mission by converting fractions to decimals. The game provides a calculator to help calculate conversions. Slide to the Top Order numbers on a number line as quickly as possible. Choose the fraction or fraction/decimal mode. Geometry Building Houses with Side Views View plans for a structure from top, front, and right views. Then build it. 3-D Shapes In this futuristic mission, players use knowledge of 3-D shapes to escape Roboidz. Billy Bug & His Quest for Grub View an ordered pair and click on directional arrows to guide a bug to that position on a coordinate grid. More Games The links below contain some of the best games for elementary math students to play at home. Look through the sites to find other games for your child. ABCya! The math games on this site, modeled from primary grade lessons, were approved of or created by teachers. BBC Bitesize This site contains a variety of high-quality games, including the “Dick and Dom” series, resembling mini movies in the style of Monty Python. Skip the money game on this British site.
