Homework has changed
Educators are thinking a lot differently about homework these days because research shows that the practice of sending traditional homework is ineffective, stressful, and has no proven benefit to student achievement or test scores. What we really want is for students to have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and have experiences with their family and friends that will help them grow. That might look different for each student and is ultimately up to the families to decide.
We know that parents are always looking for ways to support their children at home and that students do best in school when we have an active partnership between school and home life. I will keep you updated throughout the year about the best ways to support your student in both Math and Reading. Additionally, you make sure that your child is reading independently at home for at least 30 minutes every day. Give them opportunities to practice using the four domains of language to communicate each day.
THE FOUR DOMAINS OF LANGUAGE USAGE:
SPEAK
Using your voice to communicate is an important way to deepen your thinking and develop your language skills. Make sure to give time to both English and Spanish each week!
LISTEN
Music, TV, conversations, stories read aloud; there are lots of ways to hear language. Ask your family members to tell you about their lives. You might learn something new about them and about yourself.
READ
At least 30 minutes of reading are required each night. What you read is up to you! Choose something you love!
WRITE
Write, doodle, type, draw, blog, journal.... share your brilliant ideas with the world.
Need another idea for ways to spend your time? We've created a resource packet FILLED with suggested activities for you to try out. Feel free to use these, or make up your own.
The packet is linked here in English and Spanish.
